고희를 넘긴 백발의 할아버지 마라토너가 다음달 14일 오전 9시 서울 상암월드컵공원 일대에서 열리는 ‘제2회 손기정배 스포츠서울마라톤’에서 마라톤 완주 100회 도전한다. ‘100회 마라톤클럽’ 회원인 석병환옹(71·서울 서초구 신원동)의 마라톤 발자취는 한마디로 놀라움 그 자체다.
개인사업을 하던 석 옹은 59세 때인 지난 1992년 허리디스크 수술을 받았다. 그 후 재발방지를 위해 동네 청계산 부근을 산책하기 시작한 것이 마라톤과 인연을 맺게 된 계기다. 걷는 운동이 척추에 좋다는 의사의 권유로 걷던 것이 속도를 점점 빨리해 조깅으로 발전했다. 점점 속도가 붙자 주변 사람들의 권유로 99년 3월 서울마라톤 대회에 처음 출전해 3시간 44분 27초로 첫 완주 테이프를 끊었다. 그 후 현재까지 5년간을 매달 한차례 이상씩 공식 대회에 나서 42.195㎞을 달리는 노익장을 과시하고 있다.
지난 4월에는 한 달간 5번이나 완주를 하는 초인적인 능력을 보여주기도 했다. 아는 정형외과 의사가 무릎 관절이나 인대에 무리가 간다며 말린 적도 있으나 자신만의 노하우로 부상을 최소화했다. 뛰고 나서는 꼭 사우나에 들러 온수 안마탕에서 몸을 풀어주는 것이 비법이란다. 이젠 함께 뛰자며 따라나서는 의사도 많다며 활짝 웃는다.
석 옹이 이번에 완주를 하면 100회 마라톤클럽 사상 5번째 주인공이 된다. 매일 아침 6㎞씩 조깅을 하고, 일주일에 4차례 10㎞ 이상 뛰어 항상 대회에 참가할 수 있는 몸을 유지하고 있다.
85세 마라톤 풀코스 완주가 목표인 석 옹은 “장애인들이 마라톤을 하는 것을 보면 나는 아무 것도 아니라고 봅니다. 이번 100회 완주를 넘어 85세까지 뛰어 젊은이들에게 무엇이든 할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶어요”라며 의지를 밝혔다.
